SPF, UVA, UVB, PA++++: The Ultimate Guide

SPF, UVA, UVB, PA++++: The Ultimate Guide
Categories: Beauty, , 9 Comments

SPF UVA UVB PA? I always say wear sunscreen and wash your makeup off at night if you’re doing this then we can be friends 🙂 If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would it be! Unlike in other countries, we’re not educated on the importance of SPF and still many don’t know the importance of it or how to protect ourselves from skin damage and cancer. Yes, you read it right; Regular use of sunscreen reduces skin cancer risk. Applying sunscreen became a habit that I use in my daily life and I wish I have learned about it sooner.

MUST-READ: Althea Korea Petal Velvet Sunaway

SPF, UVA, UVB, PA, ++++? What does these all mean and what these stands for? I agree, these labels are so confusing and some might just ignore it. We see all of these in the market but let me tell you, if you don’t know these terms and even if you buy the expensive sunscreen /sunblock in the market, you are not getting the protection your skin needs. If you are wondering what all those labels mean, sit back and takes note on today’s blog post.

All About SPF, UVA, UVB, PA++++

SPF – Sun Protection Factor
It is the measurement of its ability to screen or block the sun’s harmful rays. How long you’ll be protected for. For example, if your sunscreen has SPF30, you can be under the sun 30 times longer than you can without sunscreen before burning. Using SPF100 is twice effective as using SPF50 IS NOT TRUE!!! What you should believe is it’s very important to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out, reapply every two hours and spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.

SPF5 = 50 minute of protection so we have to reapply every 50 minutes.NAH! I’m too busy for that and will not work for my busy schedule, so are you right?! The recommended use starts at SPF15; It is equal to two and a half hours of protection , SPF30 = 5 hours of protection , SPF90 = 15 hours of protection

These two are different types of ultraviolet radiation from the sun and have been linked with skin cancer (the latter part is the main cause of sunburn).

UVA (Penetrate the skin’s deepest layers)
Stands for Ultra Violet A ray and are very powerful! It is present at all times during daylight hours. It penetrates into the deeper levels of our skin causing long-term damage, UVA speeds up skin aging; hyperpigmentation, sun spots, saggy skin and wrinkles. Yes, 90% wrinkles are usually caused by sun damage!
Easiest to remember : UVA = UV AGING

UVB (Affect the surface layers of the skin)
Stands for Ultraviolet B ray. These rays don’t penetrate as deeply as UVA. BUT UVB damages our skin too! UVB energy causes redness and sunburn on the skin. They have a big role in development of skin cancers. Easiest to remember : UVB = UV BURN

Before we discuss PA, (I know a lot still don’t know the meaning of these + signs) let me share with you all about PPD …

Stands for Persistent Pigment Darkening. It measures a sunscreen’s amount of protection from UVA rays. It’s all about the time it takes for the skin to tan. For example, a PPD of 10 means it will take you 10 times longer for your skin to tan without protection. THE TRUTH: The greater the number of plus signs, the better a sunscreen protects against UVA rays.

Stands for Protection Grade of UVA. It ranges from PA+ to PA++++
PA+ = A sunscreen with a PPD of 2 to less than 4. It provides the protection of medium UV radiation.
PA++ = A sunscreen with PPD of 4 t 8. Provides moderate protection against UVA rays
PA+++ = Sunscreen with PPD of 8 to 16. For normal skin and provides strong protection against UVA rays.
PA++++ = With a PPD of 16 or greater

My Thoughts about Althea Milk Peel Cream Mask

I am so excited when Althea finally reveal their new product; Althea Milk Peel Cream Mask and among all the Althea exclusives, this is my favorite! It is an interesting product because it combines the powers of a cleanser, exfoliator and mask all-in-one. The scent reminds me of baby powder. It squirts out of the bottle, dispense the right amount of product required as a lightweight clay, and it magically transforms into a rich, dense lather made of micro bubbles. The fun part begins when I leave it on my skin for a minute or two – I feel a tingly sensation and that’s OK coz that how you know that the bubbles are working their magic!

Overall, I’m impressed with this product! I’ve got soft skin softer than baby’s and surprisingly no more flaky skin. I let my friends and family try it and all have heart-eyes while it’s bubbling on their face. Even the boys in the fam try it and happy with the results!

Very gentle on skin to slough away dead skin cells, encouraging skin turnover, improving its texture, strengthens and moisturizes the complexion. After weeks of using it, I notice it evens out and brighten my skin while minimizing enlarged pores. It feels sooo nice and 100x soft to the touch, softer than baby’s skin, NO MORE FLAKY SKIN. I am impressed with this product! Sooo fun and convenient to use, can I use this everyday Althea? TAKE ALL MY MONEY ALTHEA! Brb, I’m gonna purchase some more to make sure I have stocks of this new Milk Peel Cream Mask.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

What are Blackheads and What Causes Them

Goodbye Blackheads – this is what we all want to say but before we successfully say it, we have to understand all about it so we can keep it at bay. Blackheads are a type of comedo. Comedones occur when the pores in the skin become plugged with dead skin cells and sebum and exists with or without acne. The most common area is the T-zone which tends to be most oily. Blackheads appear so dark because the gunk and dead skin cells trapped in the pore oxidizes and turns black. A lot of us use different tools to remove blackheads, some use tweezers, peel-off masks, pore strips and clay masks but let’s face the fact; removing it with the first method for some is really satisfying to watch IF you have a strong stomach and the latter are relaxing ways to do but girllll, it doesn’t remove everything. To read more about the best blackhead devices, check out my recommendations at Estheticshub.
