Unlike in other countries, we’re not educated on the importance of SPF and still many don’t know the importance of it or how to protect ourselves from skin damage and cancer. Yes, you read it right; Regular use of sunscreen reduces skin cancer risk. Applying sunscreen became a habit that I use in my daily life and I wish I have learned about it sooner.

SPF, UVA, UVB, PA, ++++? What does these all mean and what these stands for? I agree, these labels are so confusing and some might just ignore it. We see all of these in the market but let me tell you, if you don’t know these terms and even if you buy the expensive sunscreen /sunblock in the market, you are not getting the protection your skin needs. If you are wondering what all those labels mean, sit back and takes note on today’s blog post.

All About SPF, UVA, UVB, PA++++

SPF – Sun Protection Factor
It is the measurement of its ability to screen or block the sun’s harmful rays. How long you’ll be protected for. For example, if your sunscreen has SPF30, you can be under the sun 30 times longer than you can without sunscreen before burning. Using SPF100 is twice effective as using SPF50 IS NOT TRUE!!! What you should believe is it’s very important to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out, reapply every two hours and spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.

SPF5 = 50 minute of protection so we have to reapply every 50 minutes.NAH! I’m too busy for that and will not work for my busy schedule, so are you right?! The recommended use starts at SPF15; It is equal to two and a half hours of protection , SPF30 = 5 hours of protection , SPF90 = 15 hours of protection

These two are different types of ultraviolet radiation from the sun and have been linked with skin cancer (the latter part is the main cause of sunburn).

UVA (Penetrate the skin’s deepest layers)
Stands for Ultra Violet A ray and are very powerful! It is present at all times during daylight hours. It penetrates into the deeper levels of our skin causing long-term damage, UVA speeds up skin aging; hyperpigmentation, sun spots, saggy skin and wrinkles. Yes, 90% wrinkles are usually caused by sun damage!
Easiest to remember : UVA = UV AGING

UVB (Affect the surface layers of the skin)
Stands for Ultraviolet B ray. These rays don’t penetrate as deeply as UVA. BUT UVB damages our skin too! UVB energy causes redness and sunburn on the skin.They have a big role in development of skin cancers. Easiest to remember : UVB = UV BURN

Before we discuss PA, (I know a lot still don’t know the meaning of these + signs) let me share with you all about PPD …

Stands for Persistent Pigment Darkening. It measures a sunscreen’s amount of protection from UVA rays. It’s all about the time it takes for the skin to tan. For example, a PPD of 10 means it will take you 10 times longer for your skin to tan without protection. THE TRUTH: The greater the number of plus signs, the better a sunscreen protects against UVA rays.

Stands for Protection Grade of UVA. It ranges from PA+ to PA++++
PA+ = A sunscreen with a PPD of 2 to less than 4. It provides the protection of medium UV radiation.
PA++ = A sunscreen with PPD of 4 t 8. Provides moderate protection against UVA rays
PA+++ = Sunscreen with PPD of 8 to 16. For normal skin and provides strong protection against UVA rays.
PA++++ = With a PPD of 16 or greater
